In 2008, when I was just 10 years old, I lost my grandpa to cancer. When he passed away, my grandpa no longer looked like my grandpa. Cancer completely overtook him. This disease didn’t just destroy my grandpa, it destroyed my family too. Losing him at such a young age was hard for all of us. I never really understood what was going on. This past Saturday, November the 11th, was University of Findlay Miracle Network Dance Marathon’s big event, OilerTHON. Sponsored by Circle K International, this ten-hour event is what we had been working towards since spring semester of 2017. We all would stand and dance for ten hours for the children who could not do this. There were competitions, t-shirts, an inflatable game, food, fundraising, hair donations and, of course, dancing! As a part of the committee, I arrived at the FRC on Friday night to start set up, then returned early Saturday morning before the dancers arrived to finish it up before our big event began. Miracle Network Dance Marathon. A year ago, those four words didn’t mean much to me at all. Today, those words ignite a fire inside of me and have ultimately changed my life.
Dance Marathon is a movement that has taken over the nation. In 1991, this movement began at Indiana University when a fellow soon-to-be classmate, Ryan White, passed away from HIV/AIDS. The university decided to come together and raise money for their local Children’s Miracle Network Hospital. Since then, about 350 more schools have started dance marathon programs and over $135 million has been raised for Children’s Miracle Network Hospitals!
